MobileDB-Excel
Overview
MobileDB-Excel
is the Microsoft Excel Plug-in used to export Excel data directly
to a MobileDB database. The database can be saved to the hard drive
or set for installation on a users Palm OS or Pocket PC device.
MobileDB for
the Palm Computing and Pocket PC Platform is the award-winning database
application that allows users to view and edit any table or spreadsheet-like
information on their Palm or Pocket PC device. MobileDB was designed
for the Palm or Pocket PC user that needs simple and efficient access
to any size table or spreadsheet information. With the release of
MobileDB v3.0, Handmark has added an intuitive list of field types
including text, number, list, checkbox, time, date and sequence
as well as more flexible filters and sorting functionality. Now
you can even export your MobileDB database to the date book!

databases over 5000 records will be a slower with searching, sorting,

MobileDB-Excel
System Requirements
To use MobileDB-Excel, you will need MobileDB
v3.0 or newer, or MobileDB
Lite v3.0 or newer on your Palm OS or Pocket PC device. You
will also need Microsoft Excel versions 95, 97, or 2000.
Using
MobileDB-Excel
Exporting
an Excel Spreadsheet to a MobileDB database
To export an
entire excel spreadsheet to MobileDB:
1. Open the Excel spreadsheet
2. Select the menu item "Export WorkSheet" from the "MobileDB"
menu
3. Click the "preferences" button and the "Field
Parameters" tab to enter or select the field names, column
widths, and data types.
4. Select the "options" tab to enter the database name
and select the export destination
5. Select the "Database About" tab to enter information
about the database
6. Click the "OK" button
7. Click the "Export" button to complete the export process
Exporting
Selected Cells to a MobileDB database
To export selected
cells to MobileDB:
1. Open the Excel spreadsheet
2. Highlight the cells you would like to export to a MobileDB database
3. Select the menu item "Export Selection" from the "MobileDB"
menu
4. Click the "preferences" button and the "Field
Parameters" tab to enter or select the field names, column
widths, and data types.
5. Select the "options" tab to enter the database name
and select the export destination
6. Select the "Database About" tab to enter information
about the database
7. Click the "OK" button
8. Click the "Export" button to complete the export process
Importing
MobileDB database
Importing a
MobileDB database will pull all the data and preferences from the
MobileDB database into an Excel worksheet. Once imported, you can
make changes to the data then export the database back to MobileDB.
To open the latest version of the MobileDB database from your Palm
OS or Pocket PC device, open the MobileDB database from the palm\<username>\backups
directory or the My Documents folder on your Pocket PC device.
To import a
MobileDB database:
1. Select the menu item "Import MobileDB Database" from
the "MobileDB" menu
2. Select the MobileDB Database to Import and click "Open"
3. The entire database will be imported to a new Excel worksheet.
If you are using the demo version of MobileDB-Excel then only 10
records will be imported.
MobileDB-Excel Database Prefeferences
The MobileDB
Preferences screen presents several options for exporting your excel
data to MobileDB.
Field Names - Select "Use First Row" to use the
first row in the worksheet as the field names in MobileDB. Select
"Use First Row/Selection" to use the first row of the
selected cells (export selection only) as the field names. Select
"Custom" to enter your own field names.
Column Widths - Enter the approximate number of characters
to display in the MobileDB column. These are easily modified on
the Palm OS Pocket PC device in MobileDB 3.0.
Field Types - Select the field type that best describes the
data for each field. Selecting the correct type will ensure proper
sort sequence in MobileDB
Text - Plain text which may be sorted alphabetically
Number - Any numeric values which may be sorted
numerically (acending or decending)
Date - Any date value which may be sorted chronologically.
Note that these cells must be defined as a "date"
in Excel
Time - Any time value which you may want to sort
chronologically. Note that these cells must be defined
as a "time" in Excel
Checkbox - Any true, false value which you would
like to appear as a checkbox in MobileDB.
Database Info
- enter
any text that you would like to appear in the "Database Info"
screen in MobileDB. You may password protect this text to keep other
Palm OS or Pocket PC users from editing the information.
Database Name - This is the name of the database as it will
appear in MobileDB
Save a Copy
of the Database - This will prompt you to save a copy of the
exported MobileDB database file on your hard drive.
Palm User - Select the Palm user for which to install the
MobileDB database. Alternately you can set it to save the database
to the hard drive only and not set the database for installation.
Remove Empty Records - This removes all "blank"
rows which will help clean up the MobileDB user interface.

Uninstallation
Use the "Uninstall"
icon in the Handmark->MobileDB_Excel program icon folder to uninstall
MobileDB-Excel from your PC. If you receive an error when starting
up Excel you may need to remove the MobileDB plugin by selecting "Add-ins"
from the "Tools" menu in Excel and deselecting "MobileDB".
Purchasing
MobileDB-Excel
Handmark has released the demo
version of MobileDB-Excel for general distribution. The demo
version allows for exporting up to 10 records to MobileDB databases.
Users can purchase a serial number from the Handmark
web site for $19.99 to "unlock" to 10 record limit.
Once purchased, select the "registration" menu item from
the "MobileDB"
menu then enter the serial number . See the Purchasing/Registering

software ("Software") provided along with this License, is licensed,
not sold, to you by Handmark Software Incorporated ("Handmark")
for use only under the terms of this License, and Handmark reserves
any rights not expressly granted to you. You own the media on which
the Software is recorded, but Handmark and its licensors retain
ownership of the Software itself.
1. License.
This License allows you to:
(a) Use one
copy of the Software on a single computer at a time To "use" the
Software means that the Software is either loaded in the temporary
memory of a computer or installed on the permanent memory of a computer.
You may install the Software on a common storage device which is
accessible by multiple computers, provided that if more computers
have access to the common storage device than the number of licensed
copies of the Software, you must have some software mechanism which
locks-out any concurrent users in excess of the number of licensed
copies of the Software and additional license is not needed for
the one copy of Software installed on the common storage device

Handmark warrants for a period of ninety (90) days from your date
of purchase that the Software as provided by Handmark will substantially
conform to Handmark's published specifications for the Software
Handmark's entire liability and your sole and exclusive remedy for
any breach of the foregoing limited warranty will be, at Handmark's
option, replacement of the media (if any), refund of the purchase
price (based on fair market value of the Software) or repair or
replacement of the Software. THIS LIMITED WARRANTY IS THE ONLY WARRANTY
PROVIDED BY HANDMARK AND HANDMARK AND ITS LICENSORS EXPRESSLY DISCLAIM

IF HANDMARK OR A HANDMARK REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE
POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGE. Handmark's liability to you for direct
damages for any cause whatsoever, and regardless of the form of
the action, will be limited to the greater of $500 or the money
paid for the Software (based on fair market value of the Software)
that caused the damages. THIS LIMITATION WILL NOT APPLY IN CASE
OF PERSONAL INJURY ONLY WHERE AND TO THE EXTENT THAT APPLICABLE
LAW REQUIRES SUCH LIABILITY BECAUSE SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW
THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF LIABILITY FOR CON-SEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL
DAMAGES, THE ABOVE LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

This License will be construed under the laws of the State of Missouri,
except for that body of law dealing with conflicts of law If any
provision of this License shall be held by a court of competent
jurisdiction to be contrary to law, that provision will be enforced
to the maximum extent permissible, and the remaining provisions
of this License will remain n full force and effect If you are a
U S Government user then the Software is provided with "RESTRICTED
RIGHTS" as set forth in subparagraphs (c) (l) and( 2) of the Commercial
Computer Software Restricted Rights clause at FAR52227-19 o sub
paragraph (c) (1) (ii) of the Rights in Technical Data and Computer
Software clause at DFARS 52 277-7013, as applicable Manufacturer

MobileDB-Excel
Serial Number
One MobileDB-Excel serial number may only be used by a single
user on one Windows(TM) machine. A new serial number is required
for each Windows(TM) machine.
Evaluation
and Registration
This is not free software. Subject to the terms below, you arehereby
licensed to use this software for evaluation purposes for 15 days
only. If you use this software after the 15 day evaluation period
a license fee of $19.99 is required. Licenses are available through
the Handmark web site at www.handmark.com. When payment is received
you will be sent a serial number which can be entered into the MobileDB-Excel.
Unregistered
use of MobileDB-Excel after the 15-day evaluation period is in violation
of U.S. and international copyright laws.
Distribution
You are hereby licensed to make as many copies of the this software
and documentation as you wish; give exact copies of the original
evaluation version to anyone; and distribute the evaluation version
of the software and documentation in its unmodified form via electronic
means. There is no charge for any of the above. You are specifically
prohibited from charging, or requesting donations, for any such
copies, however made; and from distributing the software and/or
documentation with other products (commercial or otherwise) without
prior written permission.
